Chapter Fourteen

Theo glanced around the round table positioned near the Living Center’s duck pond and experienced a feeling of déjà vu. Not long ago, he’d sat at this very table and told these same three ladies he didn’t need their help, thank you very much.

What a difference a few weeks made.

Reminding himself that it took a strong man to admit he’d been wrong, Theo spoke from the heart. “I should never have turned down your previous offer.”

Gladys’s gaze sharpened.

“We’re happy to help,” Katherine told him.

Ruby gave a little squeal and clapped her hands. “Izzie will be in love with you in no time.”

“That isn’t exactly the kind of help I need,” Theo clarified.

Though her expression betrayed nothing of her inner thoughts, one of Gladys’s dark eyebrows winged upward. “What, then?”

“I have a confession.” Theo hesitated.

Was involving these women foolish? When he’d been listening to the pastor, this course of action had appeared obvious. He’d believed these women had been brought into his life for a reason. Now, with three sets of eyes on him, he wondered if he’d been too hasty in involving them.

“Tell me, my child.” Gladys made the sign of the cross, as if she were a priest, and they were in a confessional.

Theo couldn’t help but smile.

He wasn’t Catholic. Neither was she.

“I understand this is difficult.” Gladys spoke in a soothing, sympathetic tone. “Mistakes can be remedied.”

Theo met her gaze. It was almost as if she knew all his—and Izzie’s—secrets. But that was impossible.

Raking a hand through his hair, Theo blew out a breath. He didn’t like feeling unsure. Normally, he was a decisive guy. Right now, he wasn’t sure what was the right course of action.

He plunged ahead.

“When I told you Izzie and I ended things on good terms, that wasn’t completely accurate.” He saw the questions coming and held up one hand in a staying gesture. “Though the details will remain between me and Izzie, I want you to understand that I didn’t just lose a girlfriend, I lost my best friend.”

He let his gaze travel slowly around the table, meeting each of their gazes. “I want you to help me win my friend back.”

The women exchanged glances.

Ruby smiled, her eyes sparkling as if she was intrigued by the challenge. “Count on us.”

Katherine nodded. “We’ll be happy to help you. Now what specifically were you—”

“One moment please,” Gladys interrupted, keeping her steely gaze trained on Theo. Normally one to jump in first, she remained silent for several more heartbeats. Finally, she lifted a hand and gave a dismissive flick of her wrist. “I don’t think we can help you.”

Ruby’s and Katherine’s wide eyes suggested they were as surprised by this turn of events as Theo was.

“Gladys, what are you saying? Stop being silly. Of course, we can help him,” Ruby chimed.

“Let me correct myself.” Gladys leaned back in her chair, as if suddenly bored by the conversation. “We can help, but…”

“Why wouldn’t we?” Katherine asked the question circling in Theo’s brain.

“Because I’ve changed my mind.” Gladys again focused on Theo.
